Revitalising African
Food Systems
We are building the modern value chains, technology, and market linkages to make indigenous crops and African agriculture commercially viable
agriculture in Africa by
Reviving underused traditional crops
and integrating them into profitable,
modern markets.

Africa has the potential to feed the world, yet our most resilient, nutritious crops remain underused. Bread Africa exists to change this. We provide the technical expertise and business infrastructure—from digital farm management to verified market contracts—that turn heritage farming into a sustainable, scalable economy.

What we do
Supporting indigenous cropsBread Africa provides technical expertise and business.

1. Research & Trials
Conducting on-farm trials to optimize indigenous crop varieties. We test cultivation methods, document traditional knowledge, and develop best practices for crops like amaranth, African nightshade, and bambara groundnut.
2. Advocacy & Awareness
Championing policy change and consumer education. We work with governments to recognize indigenous crops, collaborate with chefs to showcase traditional foods, and educate communities about nutritional benefits.
3. Market Development
Creating viable value chains for forgotten foods. We connect farmers to premium markets, facilitate partnerships with conscious retailers, and develop quality standards for traditional produce.
4. Technical Support
Providing hands-on assistance to farmers transitioning to indigenous crops. From seed selection to post-harvest handling, we ensure farmers have the knowledge and tools for commercial success.
Harvesting heritage,
creating opportunity

BREAD provides comprehensive support
to farmers and businesses working with
indigenous African crops. From technical
expertise on cultivation practices to
developing market linkages, we're building
an ecosystem where Africa's most resilient
and nutritious food and fibre can thrive
commercially.
Our work ensures that crops like sorghum,
amaumbe, and African potato become
profitable choices for farmers while
preserving our agricultural biodiversity.
Projects
African Cuisine Connect
Bridging the gap between indigenous crop farmers and conscious consumers. This initiative connects small-scale farmers growing traditional African vegetables with restaurants, retailers, and households seeking authentic, nutritious ingredients. We're building a network that celebrates African culinary heritage while ensuring fair prices for farmers.

“BREAD cleaned up our business, reducing our monthly overheads by more than 25% in just 18 months. We are excited to continue building Living Pharmacy with her.”
